The Urban School Food Alliance is pleased to have the support of an advisory board– a diverse group of leaders and professionals to bring their unique knowledge, skill sets and experiences to the Alliance and its mission. Members of the advisory board volunteer their time to provide valuable input and technical expertise to help the Alliance champion important initiatives to serve the health and wellness of students.
In this week’s “Advisory Board Spotlight” series, we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Tirana Barry.
Kyra Tirana Barry, Advocate for women and children
Kyra has been active in the sports based youth development and education sectors as a board member, leader and fundraiser. Her focus is providing opportunities for the underserved and particularly young women.
Why do you want to work with the Urban School Food Alliance?
In my work in urban schools and particularly with athletes, nutrition is an essential part of their success not only on the field but in the classroom. Working in public policy, I have seen first-hand the significant changes made when organizations come together. I believe the Urban School Food Alliance is in an unique position to make these changes, and I want to help make that happen.
What experiences and special skill sets do you have that you believe from which the Alliance can benefit most?
I enjoy most working with new organizations or those in transition to help institutionalize passion and create a forward thinking strategy. I am able to build on past experiences and a deep understanding of organizations to establish structure and strategy as well as build new partnerships.
What are you most excited about for the future of the Alliance?
I think that the Alliance can have a major impact on the quality and sustainability of school food as well as create efficiencies and cost savings in the procurement process that will benefit all stakeholders in the school food pipeline.
